What are lithium ion batteries, what are they made of, and what advantages do they have over other battery storage technologies?

A lithium-ion battery is a type of rechargeable battery in which lithium ions move from the negative electrode to the positive electrode during discharge and then back again during charging. The chemistry, performance, cost, and safety characteristics of lithium-ion batteries differ. Lithium-ion batteries, as opposed to lithium primary batteries (which are disposable), use an intercalated lithium compound as the electrode material rather than metallic lithium.

Lithium batteries, first proposed in the 1970s and commercially produced by Sony in 1991, are now used in mobile phones, airplanes, and automobiles. Despite several advantages that have led to their increasing success in the energy industry, lithium ion batteries have some drawbacks and are a subject of much debate.

What are lithium batteries, and how do they work?

A lithium battery is made up of four major components. It contains the cathode, which determines the battery’s capacity and voltage and serves as the source of lithium ions. When the battery is charged, lithium ions are stored in the anode, which allows electric current to flow through an external circuit.

The electrolyte, which is made up of salts, solvents, and additives, acts as a conduit for lithium ions between the cathode and anode. Finally, there is the separator, which acts as a physical barrier between the cathode and anode.

Why lithium battery instead of a lead-acid battery?

In comparison to lead-acid and gel battery types, lithium provides up to 20% more DOD (Depth of Discharge), 3 times more energy density, and a lifetime of 6,000 cycles, which is equivalent to 6 times more than alternative technologies.

Pros and cons of lithium batteries

Lithium batteries have a significantly higher energy density than other types of batteries. They can have up to 150 watt-hours (WH) of energy per kilogram (kg), compared to 60-70WH/kg for nickel-metal hydride batteries and 25WH/kg for lead acid batteries.

They also have a lower discharge rate than others, losing around 5% of their charge in a month as opposed to 20% for nickel-cadmium (NiMH) batteries.

Lithium batteries, on the other hand, contain a flammable electrolyte that can cause small-scale battery fires. It was due to this that the infamous Samsung Note 7 smartphone combustions occurred, forcing Samsung to scrap production and lose $26 billion in market value. It should be noted that this has not occurred in the case of large-scale lithium batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries are also more expensive to manufacture, costing nearly 40% more than nickel-cadmium batteries.
